Tina Dunlap: Studio Owner, Teacher Trainer, and Very Cool Girl

June 21st, 2012

When I first met Tina Dunlap last year, she was quiet, introspective, and serious.  She was also was super fit.  Her form with the BarreAmped exercises right from the start was exemplary.   She went through the certification with ease but also with determination and got everything out of it that she could.  She totally made an impression on me.  Since then she has been through many certifications and has traveled with me and is now the first instructor outside the Franklin Flagship studio considered a teacher trainer.  She has earned this because she knows the method inside and out and is an amazing example of BarreAmped!  The coolest part about Tina is that she is a girl who not only does BarreAmped faithfully, but she also fishes and paddleboards and does things that my husband wishes I would do.  And the best part is that I am going to see Tina in August.  So I am hoping she will take me on some excursion to help my coolness factor.  Because this is one very cool girl…

We caught up with Tina for some Q&A.

1/  What is your favorite part of teaching BarreAmped?

Everything!  I love that BA is so form focused & that each class is different.  I also love seeing the changes in my clients and actually having them see the changes in themselves.  It makes it all worth it to me when someone says “my husband noticed my legs or my arms”, “I’ve gone down 2 sizes”, “this is the first time I actually feel comfortable in a swimsuit” or “I tried on a pair of jeans that didn’t fit me a few months ago & now there almost too big”.  And they proceed to thank me, when really it was all them!

2/  What is your background?

I started Pilates in 2002 and became addicted to it.  It was the one form of exercise that I could do and never get bored with.  I practiced for six years and decided to become an instructor in 2008.  I went on to become certified under the Physical Mind Institute and the rest is history!  Now in my studio, Balanced Barre and Pilates, I offer private and duo reformer sessions, BarreAmped, and yoga.

3/  How long have you been teaching BarreAmped?

1 year

4/  What are your hobbies?

I’ll try anything once, weather I stick with it is another thing.  Some of my favorites are running, reading & fishing, traveling and cooking.

Parallel on Paddleboard

5/  How long have you been in the fitness world?

I’ve been active my whole life, always doing something or trying something new.  I didn’t get serious about fitness until I was 22 & discovered Pilates. Pilates changed exercising for me as a whole, because it taught me how to move properly and brought my workouts to a whole different level.  Fast forward 10 years & adding BarreAmped into the mix had again brought me to a whole new fitness level.  I am running faster then ever before and all around much stronger in everything I do.

6/  What is different about BarreAmped and other classes you have taught or have taken?

The 2 biggest things for me are form & neutral spine.  It is rare that you take a class where both are so important.  Most gyms don’t care about either & in other barre classes I have taken, you tuck, which has in turn left me with a sore back.  It should be common sense to people that if you are not in proper form, your basically spinning your wheels & wasting your time.  It is also the BarreAmped method itself.  I have clients that have been to other studios all over & they say hands down this is the best barre method they have found & one of the main things I hear is that I actually pay attention to form and correct people.

7/  How do you stay slim?

I am really active.  I try to take 3 BA classes a week, run, ride my bike to work, walk my dogs, swim, paddle board…I don’t do well when I am not doing something!

8/  What is your favorite cheat meal?

I don’t have a cheat meal.  I believe you can have everything in moderation.  I eat healthy to begin with, so if I want something that would be considered bad for me, I’m going to eat it.  The one thing I NEVER eat is fast food!

9/ Favorite workout line of clothing?

Lululemon

10/  If you could only pick one artist to create playlist’s from, who would it be?

Coldplay

11/  What is something we might not know about you?

2 things

1.  I want to be able to do the splits & practice everyday…I’m getting close!

2.  I WILL go Cage Diving with Great White Sharks (this is on my bucket list)

Extended Back Bend

Best Client Success Story:

I have a client that started classes with me in January 2012.  She comes 3-4 times a week.  She has lost over 12 inches all around and almost 20lbs!

BarreAmped is the only exercise method she has been able to stick with & she actually enjoys it.  She had said that BA is something she could see herself doing years down the road.

Anything else you want to add?

I am so grateful for the BA method.  It is because of BA that I was able to open my own studio (which had been a dream of mine for years).  I am also grateful for all the opportunities I have had since becoming a BA instructor and feel so lucky to be a part of this method!  Thank you, thank you, thank you to Suzanne and Levi for everything, could not have asked for a better fitness family!

Well, Tina, we are grateful to have you in our BA family and I am personally looking forward to some sushi dinners and maybe a paddleboarding lesson in August! xo Suzanne

Introducing BarreAmped Franklin’s Amy Weber

May 31st, 2012

The beautiful Amy Weber is a force to be reckoned with.  Having been with the studio since before its inception, Amy is well known amongst clients and teachers alike.  She is known for hard classes, awesome playlists, her statement chin length blonde curly bob, her edgy ensembles of lululemon, and a rock hard body.  Judging by her form, strength and energy, no wonder she’s known around the studio as a machine.  We caught up with Amy to learn more about her views of BarreAmped, what inspires her, and what she does for fun.

What is your favorite part of teaching BarreAmped?

I love teaching seat work!
Truly the most challenging part of the class to choreograph and to correct…my goal is to take clients on a journey through seamless transitions!

What is your background?

I studied Dance since age 3- primarily focused in tap, Cheerleading for 12 years, Choreography in local music theater productions in college, Lots and Lots of Various Fitness Training

How long have you been teaching BarreAmped?

I had the honor of starting my apprenticeship with Suzanne in late summer 2008, before BarreAmped had been named a method… I’ve been teaching BarreAmped since its birth.
I also am really enjoying my role as a teacher trainer…I learn so much from all of our amazing instructors nationwide! It truly is a beautiful give and take type of experience!

What are your hobbies?

Playing with my two boys: Camden (4) and Dash (2); Reading, Date Nights with my Husband, Sister Fun with my Sis- Ali, and Hang time with the BEST girlfriends in the world!

How long have you been in the fitness world?

I have always been into fitness. My early focus was in Tae Bo with Billy Blanks and Shellie Blanks Cimarosti (two of my fitness heroes) beginning in 2002

What is different about BarreAmped and other classes you have taught or have taken?

I’ve taught a lot of kickboxing classes and I trained a great deal in Cardio Barre in Los Angeles- very dancy and focused a lot on deep turnouts and ROM movement.

Lots of weight training when I was younger as well…this created bulk muscle in my body, which has been a challenge to lose. I wish I could teach the world how to simply use their body weight as their main training tool!

It wasn’t until I met Suzanne in 2008 that I learned how isometric barre training mixed with beautiful postural poses could be so beyond mind/body challenging and changing!
There truly is nothing like teaching this method! I love watching our clients pull from their inward focus to gain amazing aesthetic results.

How do you stay slim?

I  teach about 10 classes per week and privately train as well….
I love rocking out in the occasional Tae Bo Class when I have time,
and of course…chasing after my kiddos.

AmySecondPosition

I love drinking raw juices and brew my own kombucha, I’m mostly dairy free, and eat as healthy as possible

What is your favorite cheat meal?

I LOVE Pasta and Fresh Fajitas with Guacamole too!
For Dessert: Living Raw Truffles

Favorite workout line of clothing?

Lululemon…their apparel fits me like a dream

If you could only pick one artist to create playlist’s from, who would it be?

That would be impossible for me! I love all genres of music and I take so much pride the eclectic playlists that I create!
I dream of  teaching a whole BarreAmped class to the music of Green Day and Foo Fighters…although sadly,  I don’t think that true Rock and Roll really fit our method

What is something we might not know about you?
I live my life in tribute to my late grandparents, Ben and Mary Groves.
They inspire me each and every day to be honest, hardworking, loving, and to always live my life with integrity!

Anything else you want to add:
Teaching and being a part of BarreAmped! It has changed my life more than I’ll ever be able to fully articulate in words.
I was able to leave working a full time job in the corporate world and find love and inspiration all around me in my work!
I’m forever grateful for Suzanne, this method and for all of those whom are involved.

Spotlight on: Suzanne Bowen, Creator of BarreAmped

April 5th, 2012

Suzanne BowenIf you are familiar with BarreAmped then chances are you are familiar with the creator, Suzanne Bowen, on some level. Suzanne is an incredible, inspiring, and hands-on entrepreneur. Suzanne grew up in Eufaula, Alabama and is very close with her family and her roots. She was classically trained at The Lotte Berk Method in New York City and Bridgehampton before moving to Franklin, Tennessee and starting her own method – BarreAmped. Suzanne also met Levi in Tennessee and together they started an adorable family with two children, Salome and Natal. Suzanne is a mother, business woman, motivator, wife, friend, and celebrity – where does she find the time?

From the moment Suzanne meets someone she has an effect on them. Suzanne cares about her clients and their health – not just in body but in mind too. She is inspiring and passionate and strong. She sends such a positive message to care about and respect yourself and your body.

Ever since she and Levi opened their first studio, Seren Motus Fitness Studios in Franklin, TN, Suzanne has positively impacted so many lives. She now has two locations in Tennessee and has licensees and certified instructors in 25 locations and counting. Suzanne is the creator of BarreAmped, BarreAmped Advanced, BarreAmped Fire, and BarreAmped Boot Camp. She is an international fitness DVD star having created and starred in multiple DVDs including 10 Minute Solution Pilates Perfect Body and Suzanne Bowen’s Gorgeous Core. She has graced the cover of Pilates Style magazine and had features in Fitness Magazine, USA Today, Family Circle, Shape Magazine, as well as a guest appearance on Good Morning America. However, if you meet Suzanne you would never know of all her success. She is humble and kind and always motivating others to succeed.

Humble as she might be, Suzanne has an impact on clients, BarreAmped instructors and anyone around her.  Victoria Skorup (certified BarreAmped Instructor in Wayne, PA) said, ” Obviously like anyone who has trained under Suzanne I find her absolutely amazing.  She has given me the tools to motivate and inspire clients young and old.  I personally have seen the changes in them and the pride I feel is so great.  I only wish Suzanne could hear how she is changing their lives also.”

A client at one of our incredible BarreAmped locations, Sphericality (Flemington, NJ), said “BarreAmped has been a valuable class for me as it fills the gap between other programs. I have never been more pleased by any other fitness class or its results than those I have achieved through BarreAmped, be it mind, body or strength! The instructors are awesome. Each instructor is superbly trained and takes a special interest in each client. What I have found when speaking to other clients is that the BarreAmped instructors make a priority of correcting your form and keeping you involved during class. Besides losing inches and dropping a pant size I have gained inner strength and confidence in every aspect of my life even beyond my BarreAmped class.” This no doubt is a trickle down effect afforded to us by being influenced and trained by Suzanne.

Lori Winter, a certified BarreAmped instructor (Nashville, TN), touched on the fact that Suzanne is very form focused, “Her commitment to proper form in exercise and her passionate enthusiasm for what she does has encouraged me to pursue an even healthier and more fit lifestyle.” Lori also went on to mention that every day she hears Suzanne’s voice telling her “zip up those abdominals” and “you can do anything for five seconds.” These are words to live by! Suzanne always says that she would rather you do one pushup right than 10 with improper form. She has posted many free videos on YouTube and her website (www.suzannebowenfitness.com) that instruct on proper form and stretching techniques. Suzanne also has an online workout plan known as the 30 Minute Slim Down Challenge where you can stream videos. They are an incredible way to stay fit when you don’t have the time to get to a class.

Suzanne is living out a dream and we are all the better for it. Suzanne stresses the importance of living life mindfully and training mindfully. Another certified BarreAmped instructor and teacher trainer, Amy Weber (Franklin, TN), said it best  “Today I am proud to be part of this fast growing method and even more grateful to Suzanne for mentoring me, always letting me shine as an individual, and entrusting her beautiful and beyond challenging method to me so that I may share it and inspire others!” Suzanne finds a way to let people be themselves and see that being themselves is the best way to better themselves. She is truly inspirational. From all the licensees, Certified instructors, clients, and friends – Thank you Suzanne!! We can’t wait to see what you do next…
